Chapter 11

Frankfurt, 2003

Oliver opened his eyes and stared into the gloomy sky. He attempted to lift his head. Where the hell was he? Everything seemed a blur as a dull ache spread from the back of his head. A silhouette of a young man hovered above and watched him curiously. ‘Are you alright?’ the man asked. ‘Man, you’re lying here in the parking lot in this cold. Are you drunk or on drugs?’

Oliver squinted to see if he recognized the face. ‘Who are you?’ he asked, holding his hand on the head. ‘Why am I on wet concrete?’

‘I was about to call the police. Do you remember anything?’ The young man asked and took Oliver’s hand to help him to his unsteady feet.

In a few second everything cleared in front of his eyes. ‘Oh, here’s my car.’ Oliver pointed and pondered. ‘Why did I come here? I know this place. I was here with Vesna... Vesna!’ he shouted, spinning around.

‘Who’s Vesna?’ I didn’t see anyone nearby.’ The young man followed Oliver’s gaze. ‘Are you sure you know what you’re talking about?’

‘Of course. What happened to Vesna?’ Oliver strained his brain to remember. ‘We had lunch together and walked back to my car... and then nothing.’ He touched his head again to check where it hurt and felt a swollen bump. ‘I think someone hit me in the head from behind,’ he said, looking at his bloody fingers. ‘Why?’

‘You said there was a woman with you, and she disappeared. Are you sure she didn’t hit you and rob you?’

Oliver blinked and narrowed his eyes, ‘Who? Vesna rob me? What’s it to you?’ But he dug one hand into his pocket for his wallet, from which a white folded paper fell out.

The young man reached for the paper. ‘What is this?’ He looked at it and handed it to Oliver.

Oliver’s eyes almost popped out of his head when he read “You will see your friend alive for 500 000 Euros.” ‘What the hell!’ Oliver shouted, bewildered.

‘Oh man, this is cool.’ The young man’s eyes lit up. ‘It’s like in the movies. Kidnapping and ransom. I’ll be famous when I tell this to the press.’

Oliver grasped his hand, ‘No! No press or police. Look at what they wrote. “If you call the police or press, you will not see your friend alive.”’

‘Who wrote the note?’ Maybe someone is kidding with you, man. Are you sure that’s real?’

‘Who could joke like that?’ Oliver shook his head and folded the paper, securing it in his pocket. ‘On the other hand, I don’t want to believe it’s real. Why would someone think I would pay such an enormous amount for my colleague?’ He sat in the car to think.

The young man stared at him, ‘What are you going to do, man? Will you pay?’

‘I don’t know. As you said, someone must be playing with me. Please, don’t call anyone. I must find out who’s fucking with my head.’

The young man nodded.

In a daze, Oliver started the engine.
